The unpaved roads of my hometown were lined with evergreens laced with colorful flowers. On my way home, I would get a cutting of each variety per day. Planting those cuttings in tin milk cans filled with soil readily lined on top of 4 old logs, formed into a square, was such a solemn ritual for me. My days were filled with expectations, eagerly looking forward to my rendezvous with my cuttings as they sprout into robust plantlets. Witnessing flower buds bloom into full glory amazed me no end: such phenomena of life made my supposed to be growing up pains pass unnoticed.</span></span></i></span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The need to transfer residence came when my children needed more freedom as they entered college. With a house close to their campus, there was no more need to fetch them after their erratic college schedule. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Nevertheless, my green thumbs got itchy so plants started to abound. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Then hubbie's uncontrolled diabetes took hold ending up into two bouts of basilar artery stroke. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">With the <a href="http://barefootroamer-barefootroamer.blogspot.com/2011/10/propagating-gynura-procumbens.html">flourishing of gynura procumbens</a>, we had to come up with the best approach to overcome the limitations of our galvanized roof. We bought a 4 feet by 8 feet, 4 inch thick styrofoam and laid it down over the galvanized iron, put pvc's under for ventilation...and presto, I had a platform on which to put my plastic planters. Two mosquito nets used to lay unused in our closet was dug and used as cover to protect the herbs from pests and harsh environmental elements. </span></div>

When Dannie came back he was able to buy 8 seedlings for 80 pesos each. Several weeks later when I told the seller that Gynura which they called ashitaba could be procured at 35 pesos in Cavite, we went home with 20 seedlings at 40 pesos each. We shared 7 seedlings to friends and relatives thus leaving us with 22 seedlings. With my husband and my mother taking 3 leaves a day, these seedlings would not last long.</span></div>
<a name='more'></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I presumed just a click of my fingers would be enough to find the solution to this predicament. I found various sites in the internet promoting the plant but not one had a straightforward pointer on how to propagate it. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>

With the proximal end immersed in water, I observed its progress with much anticipation. The succeeding days were a cycle of ups and downs with the leaves vibrant and alive on the first two days, started to wilt on the third day then gradually sprang back to life later until the roots started to sprout. This slow process seemed to be tedious not only on my part but for the cutting as well. If it would take 6-8 weeks for my seedling to reach this growth stage, I wondered how long would it take for it to be able to serve its purpose. I had incubated 6 stems this way so we had just 16 seedlings left. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Definitely I would run out of supply for my two patients.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

Earthen pots were not considered therefore. The exorbitant price of plastic pots would put much dent on my pocket while seedling bags would prove messy for our galvanized iron roof. In the final analysis, we tried out the feasibility of used plastic containers of mineral water as pots for our treasured gynura procumbens. </span></div>

I presupposed when we came back after a 5 day vacation in Dingalan, the stems would be ready for another cuttings. But it was not so. The succulent leaves were dried out by aphid infestation. Guided by my teachers in the internet, I diligently sprayed the underside of each leaf with water everyday. Weary and disgusted I almost succumbed to these pests if I were not just pinning for the benefit that my loved ones could get from these leaves. A lowly mosquito net stocked in the deep recesses of our locker became an effective vanguard that revived the lusciousness of the leaves and my fading enthusiasm. </span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Gynura Procumbens like any other gift of nature has to be shared. In this context I have shared my personal account on the benefit it accorded my husband and I am now sharing basic tips on caring for it.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">1. Cut the leaves for consumption from top to bottom, then get the stem for planting. If the stem is really long, you can get up to 3 cuttings per stem. Immerse the proximal portion of the stems in water for at least 15 minutes.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I7vYIGzK3ks/TpHRIAPyhWI/AAAAAAAABJM/WUafvlSqeFw/s1600/gynura+002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I7vYIGzK3ks/TpHRIAPyhWI/AAAAAAAABJM/WUafvlSqeFw/s320/gynura+002.jpg" width="240" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zhh-8IK5u7A/TpHRm0QnDuI/AAAAAAAABJQ/LtlbwIRZRYo/s1600/gynura+004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zhh-8IK5u7A/TpHRm0QnDuI/AAAAAAAABJQ/LtlbwIRZRYo/s320/gynura+004.jpg" width="240" /></a></span></div>
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X-_D4edjmvk/TpHTSBcOzoI/AAAAAAAABJU/gExKJwLt598/s1600/gynura+009.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X-_D4edjmvk/TpHTSBcOzoI/AAAAAAAABJU/gExKJwLt598/s200/gynura+009.jpg" width="200" /></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">2. Plant the cuttings in seedling bags. I personally prefer the disposable plastic containers because when the time comes to repot the seedling to a bigger container you can just invert the container and the whole mold of soil would come out, thus leaving the roots unharmed during the transplant.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">3. Keep the seedlings out of direct sunlight; water them frequently. They thrive best under the rain.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">4. The roots are usually established in two weeks and the seedlings are ready for re potting.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">5. Once transferred to big containers, start introducing them to sun light.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">6. Keep the pests out. If aphids abound in your area, keep the plants under a net. Even with the net on, aphids can still be carried by ants, so keep the ants out; also the snails and earthworms. Keeping these menace out can be a daunting task. I usually pour organic pesticide which I read in various internet sites. </span><br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><b><span style="color: #333333;">"To make garlic oil spray,</span></b><span style="color: #333333;"> </span><span style="color: #333333;">mince or finely chop three to four cloves of garlic, and add them to two teaspoons of mineral oil. Let this mixture sit for 24 hours. Strain out the garlic pieces, and add the remaining liquid to one pint of water. Add one teaspoon of liquid dish soap. This mixture can be stored and diluted as needed. When you need to spray, use two tablespoons of the mixture added to one pint of water in a spray bottle. </span></span></i><br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><b><span style="color: #333333;">To use your garlic oil spray,</span></b><span style="color: #333333;"> </span><span style="color: #333333;">first test by spraying an inconspicuous part of the plant to see if your mixture harms it at all. If there are no signs of yellowing or other leaf damage after a day or two, it is safe to use. If there is leaf damage, dilute the mixture with more water and try the test again." </span></span></i><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> In my case, every time it is needed I would just pour 1/2 cup of the concentrate in a pail of water, then sprinkle the said solution to the plants particularly on the undersides of the leaves and onto the pots and their bases. This solution will kill not only the aphids but also the ants and bugs: even the good helpful bugs.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">7. Fertilize the plants every month.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">8. The more you get the leaves, the more you do cuttings, the more your Gynura Procumbens would increase and flourish...this is why it is called "Tomorrow's plant" ...if you cut a leaf in the morning, at the end of the day a new branch will come out.</span><br />

<a name='more'></a><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">At 11 AM on January 28, 2009, DeeJ and I together with Sir Bolen of SelJ Pharmaceutical Company boarded a Philippine Airline jet plane bound for Cagayan de Oro. Twenty minutes later, the pilot geared up the engine so we were asked to put off our cell phones. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">At 12:30 PM DeeJ was so elated to have set his foot on Cagayan de Oro for the first time. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It was only after getting out of the airport that both of us remembered our cell phones. The moment we put them on, we were bombarded with text messages. Before we were able to open any one of them, we got a frantic call from Dane. Although what he could only utter was “Mommy si Daddy”, thousands of miles across the sea his voice reverberated with much anxiety. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">His Dad suffered a stroke. All his life Dane was used to having me around to tend to sick people in the family. With a life threatening incident on somebody so dear to him, he was at a lost being alone. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It was a basilar artery ischemic stroke. The medullo-pontine area of the brain controls the heart and the respiration. Dane was encircled by close relatives, friends and my colleagues. His Dad was in good hands. Definitely we needed God the most.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">This was not the time to panic. We had to take our chance for the next flight back home. Finally re united as a family, no one among us, DeeJ, Dane and I left Dannie’s side during his whole ordeal, until one by one the tubes were removed. We anxiously held our breath as we watched him took his first steps.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">For others it was just a mild stroke. Basilar artery stroke a mild stroke? I firmly believe the speedy recovery of Dannie was answered prayers, a precious gift from above …God’s miracle.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Our travail however did not stop there. Years of chain smoking and beer drinking had really taken its toll on Dannie’s 52 year old diabetic body. The biweekly visit to Rehabilitation Medicine brought back his balance but the heart rate, blood pressure and blood glucose were erratically high in spite of all the medications; until on the sixth month he had another medullo-pontine stroke.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Subcutaneous Insulin given at its highest dose was not doing its expected work. I always have this doubt about insulin for long term management of Diabetes type 2. Since my childhood I had witnessed people who were apparently well then just died in their sleep after their insulin night shot; of diabetic relatives who ended up in dialysis rooms or being amputated or having heart attack even after years of insulin management.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">A new endocrinologist was the answer. Pioglitazone and Metformin were added to the Insulin regimen under more rigid serial capillary blood glucose determination. In such time like this when only a thin line separated life from death no stone must not be left unturned. We travelled all the way to a place in Sierra Madre along the Pacific Ocean believed to be still inhabited by entities of the third dimension. Officiated by a tribal healer, an offering was laid and a ritual was celebrated appealing for forgiveness had Dannie transgressed their territory during the construction of our vacation house there.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">With Acarbose and Diamicron added, at last Dannie was free from insulin injections. Indeed, his pancreas started to secrete insulin, his glut 4 transporter remembered its functions and his cells began to accept glucose. But w</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">e could not rest on our laurel yet. He walked 2 hours a day and dieted well but his fasting blood sugar fluctuated between 120 to 180; his 2 hours post prandial and HBA1C always a little higher than normal. His medications were frequently adjusted.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Then one day when I visited my brother, I took notice of a potted plant by his bedside. The Japanese neighbor who gave it to him claimed it to be good for diabetes and high cholesterol. He convinced me to chew a leaf. The taste although quaint was not bad. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">So off we went to Tagaytay to look for the plant. They called it ashitaba. Whatever it was called, no matter how exhorbitant the price was, we brought home one. Wary of its probable effects I went on line not only to search for its real name but also for evidence based literature. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

If before his blood pressure would swing from 200/100 to 90/60, now it is comfortably maintained at 120/80. His dry wrinkled skin became supple and pinkish.</span><br />
